Description
Every garden needs a few well-placed structural plants which rise above the melee of different colours and shapes, drawing the eye and giving real architectural impact. To achieve this effect, few plants are more well-suited than Panicum 'Thundercloud'. Handsome, steely blue-green arcs of foliage rise from neat clumps, and through summer and autumn the look is softened by a veil of delicate, airy, open panicles that float atop tall, graceful stems.
Panicum virgatum 'Thundercloud' favours a position in full sun, and grows well in a wide range of soil types—so long as they have good drainage. The stems can stay in situ through the autumn, to provide end-of season interest—simply cut them down to ground in later winter before new foliage appears. Leaving grasses in place through the winter is highly beneficial for wildlife, giving a place to shelter, So, eco-friendly gardeners will certainly want to make space for a few clumps of Panicum 'Thundercloud' in their display.

Useful information
-
Soak the Panicum 'Thundercloud' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Switch grass" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
