Description

Hosta 'Rainforest Sunrise' is a compact, mound-forming plantain lily, reaching a height of just 25cm or so. It has thick, oval, cupped, prominently veined leaves of chartreuse to yellow, with dark green outer margins. In June and July, upright stalks carry fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers of the palest lavender – almost white. This is a sport of the popular Hosta 'Maui Buttercups', and in 2013 it was voted Hosta of the Year.

As with most plantain lily varieties, Hosta 'Rainforest Sunrise' grows best if set in moist soil, in part to full shade. Also, for impact, it should be planted in bold groups. Fork in plenty of well-rotted garden compost or leaf mould when planting, as hostas hate to dry out. Hostas go completely dormant in the autumn, and the dying foliage can be removed any time before mid-spring. After three or four years, this Hosta will be easily divided in spring or autumn.

Useful information

    • Soak the Hosta 'Rainforest Sunrise' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting

    • Plant your "Plantain lily" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors

    • Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).

    • Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
