Description
Let Yunnan liquorice into your borders and it will reward you with a long season of curious charm! Glycyrrhiza yunnanensis is a resilient hardy perennial with plenty to give—fine pinnate leaves adorn slender, woody, upright stems from spring to autumn, coupled with pale purple flower clusters in early summer. From late summer the old flowers form fuzzy green seedheads, which develop a pinkish-purple hue in autumn. Once the seedheads of Glycyrrhiza yunnanensis have been through the purple fuzzy phase they dry out into spiky golden-brown balls which last over winter as pretty frost-catchers and hidey-holes for insects.
Glycyrrhiza yunnanensis is easy to grow and, as a perennial, it will return every year. After you have enjoyed the winter seedheads, you can cut the stems back down to almost ground level and they will throw out fresh new stems in spring. They can grow quite tall (up to 1.5m once established) so they’re ideal for a space near the back of a border or as a partial screen. Yunnan liquorice (or Yunnan licorice) also makes great cutting material, the seedheads during autumn and winter will pad out your posy with an alternative texture, shape and contrast!

Useful information
-
Soak your Glycyrrhiza yunnanensis roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Yunnan liquorice" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
