Description
Introduce easy, long-lasting colour and structure to your planting scheme with super-low maintenance Eryngium 'Blue Star'. That snowflake-like lacy collar of metallic-looking bracts on rigid, upright stems will bring so much to your planting scheme. From the moment these flowerheads emerge in an intense shade of lavender-blue in summer, and continuing into autumn and winter after the colour has faded to silver-grey. Sea holly is an incredible plant, it’s so resilient—drought tolerant, fully winter hardy and strong enough to withstand the gustiest weather. Favouring stony or sandy soils, Eryngium 'Blue Star' is a go-to perennial for coastal areas, but gardeners inland will also find it thrives in any free draining spot!
Eryngium alpinum 'Blue Star' is immensely free-flowering—no surprise as it was bred for the cut flower industry. Despite its cut-flower credentials, you’ll find this easy-going perennial is a great garden plant, undemanding in sun or semi-shade, even tolerating poor, thin soils where other plants refuse to grow. Bees and butterflies will love Eryngium 'Blue Star' too, exploring the drifts of nectar-rich blooms from July to October, long after other perennials have faded.
Eryngium received its name from a thistle plant (Eryngium campestre) used by the father of botany, Theophrastus, in ancient Greece.

Useful information
-
Soak the Eryngium 'Blue Star' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Sea holly" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
