Description
Everything about Dierama pulcherrimum is heavenly. Their movement in the breeze, the nodding blooms which hang like purple raindrops from the delicate arched stems, the way the flowers almost appear to be floating in mid air. It is also, aptly, known as angel's fishing rod, which makes total sense. If angels were to cast their lines, they would surely look this beautiful. Let their gentleness grace a sunny border among soft, equally airy ornamental grasses to create flowing summer wilderness, or use them to soften a vibrant, hot border. They look amazing combined with virtually anything!
Dierama pulcherrimum is a perennial which has a grassy look about it. The foliage is evergreen and narrow, the flower stems are tall and arching. This beautiful plant is hardy in areas with relatively mild winters, coping with winter temperatures down to around -10°C if they are planted in a free-draining, sandy or loamy soil. Dierama grows happily in coastal areas and is relatively drought tolerant and very low maintenance once established.

Useful information
-
Soak the Dierama pulcherrimum roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Angel's fishing rod" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
