Description
If you fancy a fern with a funky twist, look no further than Athyrium 'Lady in Red'! Fresh green fronds adorn a ruby-red midrib, bringing a flash of contrasting colour to a shaded leafy area. Enjoy watching the fronds uncurl in spring every year, just imagine how completely fantastic those fresh leaves will look emerging from a carpet of spring bulbs like Scilla, Eranthis or Narcissus. Athyrium 'Lady in Red' is an extra swanky plant for shade, turn a dull space into a tranquil, beautiful spot to chill in during summer!
Athyrium 'Lady in Red', also known as lady fern, is deciduous and will naturally die back in winter, but remaining leaves provide essential cover for hibernating wildlife so avoid the temptation to tidy it up straight away in autumn—instead, trim back any remaining fronds in early spring to make way for the spectacular spirals that will emerge. The red stems of Athyrium filix-femina var. angustum 'Lady in Red' will be subtle in the first year while young, but become more vivid and chunky as the plant matures.
Some ferns, such as the lady fern, are considered sun-tolerant and will grow perfectly fine when you plant them in direct sunlight.

Useful information
-
Soak the Athyrium 'Lady in Red' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Lady fern" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
