Description
When most people think of the garden Amaryllis, they think of large, trumpet-shaped lily blooms in shades of pink—and beautiful they are, too. But Amaryllis belladonna 'Alba' is a rare-to-find version, which first appeared in the 1930s. It has flowers of bright creamy-white. It is hardy, tall, fragrant—and stunning! Green-flushed flower buds start to develop in early summer, and by September and October, when the vast majority of summer flowers have gone over, heads of full, bright, lily blooms are carried on long, upright stems.
This plant is referred to sometimes as White Naked Lady, because the flowers appear, as if naked, before the long, strap-shaped leaves develop. These leaves then stay with the plant over winter, before dying down in late spring and early summer. Ideally, plant Amaryllis belladonna 'Alba' in full sun, where the bulbs enjoy a good baking during the summer, before starting to bloom again in September.
