Description
If you're hoping to make a dramatic contrast in the garden, Salvia 'Dark Night' is the perfect choice. Racemes of ultra violet, tubular flowers emerge from dark purple-tinged stems, perfectly complementing the sage green, deeply textured foliage. With a compact, bushy habit, this sturdy plant makes a striking feature plant for the middle or front of the border—plant it in groups or drifts for dense blocks of bold colour, or weave it amongst Agapanthus albiflora or other bright and airy plants like Gaura for an eye-catching juxtaposition of dark and light.
The pointed oval leaves are aromatic, which makes this a nice option for planting close to a seating area. Salvia nemorosa Bazuin® 'Dark Night' var. 'Sabadate', a form of woodland sage, will thrive best in a sunny spot with free-draining soil and copes well with periods of drought once established. It's fully hardy and clump forming, which means that you can look forward to seeing more and more beautiful flowering stems from this perennial each year. For best results, deadhead regularly to encourage more to appear and keep your display looking intensely coloured throughout the summer months!

Useful information
-
Soak the Salvia 'Dark Night' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Anise-scented sage" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
