Description
The hardy herbaceous Peony 'Flame' is full of drama—and colour. Each year in late spring (and in early summer in cooler regions), it will produce stunning, eye-catching, large single flowers. The petal colours are hard to describe—some authorities call them bright, lustrous flame-red, while others describe them as orange-red, or even magenta with coral undertones! You decide, but each bloom is vivid, with its centre of rich, golden yellow stamens. It is one of the earliest peony cultivars to flower, and is becoming increasingly popular. Growing to some 80cm in height, it has dark green, divided foliage.
Paeonia lactiflora 'Flame' was bred more than 80 years ago, and the fact that it is still sold means that it is one of the best—it is ideal in beds, borders and patio containers, in full sun or part shade. The stems are sturdy, and well able to hold the magnificent flowers without the need for staking. Oh, and the blooms may be cut for indoor decoration, too.

Useful information
-
Soak the Paeonia 'Flame' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
