Description
Stipa 'Ponytails' is the sort of grass that makes a border look instantly more thoughtful, as though a breeze has been carefully pencilled into the design. Also known as ponytail grass, it forms masses of fine, hair-like yellow-green foliage, soft in outline yet wonderfully effective at catching the light. In summer, Stipa 'Ponytails' sends up feathery plumes of silvery-white to pale green flowers, held lightly above the leaves. They shimmer, ripple and sway at the slightest movement of air, bringing an easy, natural rhythm to sunny planting schemes.
Graceful rather than grand, Stipa 'Ponytails' is invaluable where texture and movement are needed, especially among perennials with stronger shapes or richer colours. Try it with salvias, lavender, achillea or alliums, where its fine foliage provides a soft veil without overwhelming its neighbours. Stipa 'Ponytails' is particularly lovely in gravel gardens, prairie-style borders and modern containers, where its airy habit can be fully appreciated. The pale flower plumes remain attractive as they mature, extending the season with a gentle, tousled charm. In a sunny, well-drained spot, Stipa tenuissima 'Ponytails' is low-fuss, light-footed and quietly mesmerising.

Useful information
-
Soak the Stipa 'Ponytails' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Ponytail grass" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost within a week of delivery and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
