Description
Polygonatum multiflorum, commonly known as Solomon’s seal, is a quietly elegant perennial that brings a natural woodland rhythm to shaded gardens. Rising from spreading rhizomes, its gracefully arching stems reach around 90cm, each lined with soft green, ovate to lance-shaped leaves arranged in an easy, unforced alternation. There is something deeply soothing about the way Polygonatum multiflorum moves through the seasons, unfurling fresh foliage in spring before settling into a calm, architectural presence that feels both generous and restrained. Ideal for dappled shade beneath trees or along a north-facing border, Polygonatum multiflorum weaves effortlessly among ferns, epimediums and spring bulbs, creating a layered, woodland tapestry that improves year after year.
In late spring, Polygonatum multiflorum reveals its true charm, as slender, pendant flowers appear discreetly beneath the stems. Each arch carries two to six tubular blooms, creamy white with subtle green tips, tucked into the leaf axils like quiet secrets. These are followed later by round black fruits, adding another gentle note of seasonal interest. Once established, Solomon’s seal is reliably hardy and undemanding, thriving in humus-rich soil where it can slowly spread and form handsome colonies. Its beauty is never showy, yet its presence is unmistakably refined, making Polygonatum multiflorum a thoughtful choice for gardeners who appreciate plants that reward patience and observation.
Solomon's seal refers to seal-like scars left where old stems were attached, once likened to King Solomon’s signet.

Useful information
-
Soak the Polygonatum multiflorum roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Solomon's seal" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost within a week of delivery and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
