Hyacinthoides italica

talian bluebells

Light up a shady space with these fabulous, award-winning Italian bluebells. The twinkling blue starry flowers of Hyacinthoides italica are a real spring treasure, borne on a short stem in pretty cone-like clusters. Despite being a small plant, it doesn’t do things by halves in terms of flower power, really packing in the blooms on its unusual upright stems and flowering for several weeks. Whether you have a woodland border or a small shady courtyard garden, grow a few groups of these 'Italian Bluebells' and they’ll look absolutely magical, slowly naturalising each year to form bold, eye-catching swathes of colour.

Naturally found nestling in woodland areas of the Mediterranean, Hyacinthoides italica are easy-to-grow bulbs thrive just as well in the UK climate and enjoy the dappled shade of trees and shrubberies. Flowering around April, they’re perfect for growing alongside English bluebells or as an unusual alternative. They also combine well with other shade-tolerant varieties, like crocuses and narcissus.
