Description
Convallaria majalis, better known as lily of the valley, is a true classic in the garden—graceful, fragrant, and effortlessly charming. With arching stems lined with dainty, bell-shaped white flowers, it brings a touch of woodland magic to shaded spaces. Blooming in late spring, Convallaria majalis carpets the ground with fresh green foliage, making it the perfect companion for trees, shrubs, or tucked-away garden corners. The sweetly scented blooms of lily of the valley have long been treasured in bouquets and perfumes, their delicate appearance belying the plant’s resilience. Once established, Convallaria majalis spreads gently, returning year after year to create a lush and naturalised display.
There’s something undeniably nostalgic about Convallaria majalis, as if it belongs in a secret garden from a storybook. The pristine white flowers of lily of the valley are small but plentiful, standing out beautifully against the rich green leaves. Thriving in cool, shaded conditions, this low-maintenance perennial rewards minimal effort with maximum charm. Whether planted beneath trees, along pathways, or in a quiet corner of the garden, Convallaria majalis brings elegance and a heavenly fragrance wherever it grows. Useful information
-
Soak your Convallaria majalis roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Lily of the valley" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
