Description
Clematis 'Doctor Ruppel' is a confident and expressive climbing leather flower, bringing colour, scale, and rhythm to vertical planting schemes. This deciduous climber grows to around 3.5 metres, its fresh green foliage forming a lush framework for the impressively large blooms that follow. From early summer, Clematis 'Doctor Ruppel' produces striking flowers measuring 14–22cm across, each one boldly patterned yet beautifully balanced. The tepals are a rich purplish pink, accented by a wide, deep reddish-pink central bar that draws the eye straight to the heart of the flower. Slightly wavy edges soften the overall look, lending movement and a gently ruffled elegance that catches the light.
After its first flush, Clematis 'Doctor Ruppel' rests briefly before returning with a second display from late summer into early autumn, extending interest when many climbers begin to fade. This repeat flowering makes Clematis 'Doctor Ruppel' particularly valuable for covering pergolas, fences, arches, or obelisks with sustained colour. It performs best in sun or partial shade, with cool, shaded roots and shelter from strong winds to protect its generous blooms. Vigorous without being overwhelming, Clematis 'Doctor Ruppel' suits gardeners who enjoy plants with presence and personality, offering a dependable structure and a long season of richly coloured flowers that feel both classic and quietly dramatic.
Clematis comes from the Greek klema, meaning climbing shoot, reflecting the plant’s natural instinct to scramble skywards.

Useful information

Soak the Clematis 'Doctor Ruppel' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Climbing leather flower" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost within a week of delivery and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
