Description

Camassia cusickii has a beautifully natural, meadow-like elegance, producing upright spikes of starry, light-blue flowers in late spring to early summer. The blooms are held with graceful poise above fresh green foliage, creating vertical accents that feel refined without looking too formal. There is a wonderful clarity to the colour of Camassia cusickii, soft enough to weave through mixed borders, yet bright enough to catch the eye among emerging perennials. Planted in generous groups, Camassia cusickii (or Cusick's camass) brings a cool, airy rhythm to the garden, rather like a blue haze that has learned to stand upright.

Grow Camassia cusickii in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil, in sun or partial shade, where it can settle and return with increasing charm each year. It looks especially lovely with late tulips, alliums, euphorbias, hardy geraniums and ornamental grasses, slipping easily into naturalistic planting as well as more composed border schemes. The upright flower spikes are excellent for adding height without heaviness, and the starry flowers bring a fresh note just as spring begins to soften into summer. Dependable, graceful and pleasingly understated, Camassia cusickii is perfect for gardeners who enjoy bulbs with a relaxed, quietly luminous presence.
