Description
Allium 'Early Emperor' is every bit the noble early riser, bringing grand purple-violet flowerheads to the border just when the garden is beginning to look pleasantly ambitious. Reaching around 80cm tall, Allium 'Early Emperor' carries dense, rounded umbels up to 15cm across, each one composed of pinkish violet-purple florets with prominent white stamens that give the blooms a lively, sparkling finish. Its glossy, dark green strap-shaped leaves provide a handsome base before the flowers take centre stage. Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Allium jesdianum 'Early Emperor' combines reliable performance with real ornamental presence.
Flowering from May to June, Allium 'Early Emperor' appears around two weeks earlier than many other tall alliums, including favourites such as 'Purple Sensation', making it a valuable choice for extending the season of sculptural spring colour. Its rounded blooms look superb threaded through late tulips, hardy geraniums, nepeta and ornamental grasses, where they add height without overwhelming their companions. Bees are quick to approve, naturally. After flowering, the seedheads remain decorative, lending structure and quiet drama to borders and gravel gardens. Elegant, early and impressively easy to place, Allium jesdianum 'Early Emperor' earns its title with considerable grace.
