Description

The ornamental grass Panicum 'Squaw' is a stunner. A clump-former, with a narrow, upright habit, it produces typical narrow, lush green grass leaves, but the tips turn a gorgeous wine-red in late summer. In addition, from mid-summer onwards, it carries airy, burgundy flushed flower spikes. As the autumn progresses both leaves and flowers darken to a golden bronze, making for a beautiful ornamental display—and provides cover for birds at the same time. Taller than many, Panicum 'Squaw' reaches a height of up to 150cm. It likes a position in full sun.

Perfect for a low-maintenance garden, Panicum virgatum  'Squaw' provides graceful height and interest, particularly at the back of a border, or in a Mediterranean- or prairie-style garden, or as a feature in a large courtyard garden. It is also ideal for planting near ponds or streams. It makes a good companion to hardy geranium, helenium and salvia. Alternatively, plant this switch grass with other ornamental grasses. At the end of the season, its leaves fade, and the plant goes into its winter slumber, before re-emerging with fresh leaf shoots in spring.

Useful information

    • Soak the Panicum 'Squaw' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting

    • Plant your "Switch grass" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors

    • Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).

    • Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
