Description
When the warmth of spring arrives, behold the showstopping Gladiolus byzantinus italicus. These pretty posies positively pop with beautiful blossoms that look like petticoats of pale pink and magenta flames! On each stem, up to twenty flowers carefully arrange themselves in a spike-like formation, complete with protruding stamen and style. Long, slender sword-like foliage stretches before the towering flower stalk, creating an ethereal effect!
Gladiolus byzantinus italicus, commonly known as Byzantine gladiolus, field gladiolus or Italian gladiolus, is a stunning perennial flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region.
Showcasing up to 20 blooms at a time, Italian gladioli are native to numerous parts of Europe and North Africa, and can be found in dry places. Over time, Gladiolus communis ssp. byzantinus (italicus) will crawl across the ground and lei themselves to greater bloom.
